Happy Monday guys! Hope everyone had a lovely weekend. Earth Day was Saturday April 22 and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join a group of fabulous company for a brunch at Ysabel West Hollywood celebrating Earth Day with farm to table culinary delights. Earth Day is not just about preserving resources and energy, but also celebrate what mother earth has to offer and living and eating organically.
Ysabel is a beautiful hot spot in WeHo and the sister restaurant to Laurel Hardware, an equally popular and well received restaurant. They strive to purchase from environmentally responsible vendors and local farms and organic suppliers ensuring guests the best culinary experience. From the moment you walk into its garden courtyard filled with natural light and open space, you are transported to a modish yet tranquil surrounding of twinkle light wrapped olive trees and leather woven lounge chairs. The design of this space cannot be more perfect for a summer evening wine and dine with friends.
While guests waited for our special Earth Day brunch, we happily helped ourselves to an assortment of hand rolled pastries and fresh berry bowl. While sipping on hand crafted specialty cocktail such as the Allie which consist of tanqueray 10, market strawberry pure, peychaud bitters and sage. After executive chef Alison Trent gave an introduction of the restaurant as well as some of the dishes we will be having, it is time to feast!
To start, we have the Farmer’s Market Chopped Salad with spicy salami, garbanzo beans, provolone and olives. It was a refreshing salad to awaken the palate. Next up was the Avocado Toast. Before you roll your eyes and say “not another avocado toast”, let me just say that our brunch group consist of an array of foodies (writers for BravoTV, BuzzFeedTasty, LA Confidential, Chef and editor of events and magazines etc) who has seen and ate all over LA as well as many parts of the country. Our consensus is that this Avocado Toast is one of the best that we, collectively as a group have ever eaten. Not only was it beautifully presented, the avocado toast topped with heirloom tomatoes, burrata cheese and garden herbs drizzled with balsamic vinegar was a delightful bite of heaven.
Next up was the Organic Quinoa Bowl with spring vegetables, mixed nuts, salsa verde and yes…more local avocados. I’m a sucker for quinoa bowl so this dish was right up my ally and I can say that I would hoard the bowl to myself and not share had it not been some diplomatic self restraint. Along with the bowl also came the Smoked Salmon Flat Bread with dill cream cheese, lemon and capers. The dough of the flatbread was the same house made dough used in pastries and it was fluffy and chewy, combined with perfectly smoked salmon slices, you have the recipe for deliciousness.
Lastly, our dessert is Buttermilk Pancakes with harry’s berries strawberries and vanilla cream. I mean, do I really need to go into the pancakes? Just take a look at the picture…don’t you want to take a big bite out of it?! Well you should because it was heavenly. Of course, we cannot end the meal with just one drink. The Tosca with fortaleza repesado, freshly muddled mint, cucumber, habanero and agave was the drink to end the perfect meal. I enjoy the spiciness from the habanero mix with the mint and cucumber slowly slip down my throat and warm up my stomach as I slowly recline into a food coma.
I must say, Earth Day or not, this brunch has been such a delight with its farm to table freshness and ingenious food presentation. There isn’t a dish that I did’t like and would recommend LA locals to come and enjoy an evening or morning of good food with good company in a most aesthetically pleasant environment. I will be making my way back to there soon if not anything, to the avocado toasts.
Now onto my outfit details for the brunch. Temperature in LA is rising quickly which means that the hemlines on pants/skirts will also be rising as well. I’ve been seeing quite a bit of pretty spring Rompers across all social platforms. To be honest, I’ve not been very much of a romper person (I mean, can you imagine the pain of going to the bathroom with kids when you wear a romper?) I’m also more of a minimal dresser and the floral rompers, albeit beautiful, aren’t my thing. That said, this very modern and minimal waist tie romper from Roser The Label is exactly the thing I would wear. I love the cutout detail mixed with waist wrap in the front.
