You guys know that when I blog about food, it is serious business. A self proclaimed foodie, I am quite picky and borderline snob when it comes to fine dining. As my culinary horizon expands over the years, it takes a lot to impress me these days and I was very pleasantly surprised by a newly discovered Michelin star awarded restaurant on my recent trip to NYC. One of my goals is to check off every single Michelin starred restaurant in NY, and during this trip in May I booked Jungsik for an evening of date night.
Jungsik offers modern Korean fine dining in NYC. The name for the restaurant, Jungsik, was a play on words. In the Korean language Jung Sik is a formal dinner and it is also the name of the Chef. Husband and I decided to do the Signature Tasting Menu which was a bargain at $225 per person. Typically I wold have expected the bill to be $300+ for a starred restaurant’s tasting menu but Jungsik kept the pricing a reasonable rate. We started off with an array of amuse bouches presented in geometric shaped mini ceramic stands in a visually stunning presentation. Probably the best amuse bouches I’ve ever had, and I knew we were in for a great dinner.
Chef, Owner and Proprietor Yim Jung Sik began his culinary journey during his army days. His talent was recognized by the commanding officer who made him his personal chef. The experience inspired Yim to learn to cook professionally, eventually leading him to the renowned Culinary Institute of America, where he was introduced to the intricacies of fine Western cooking. This was followed by apprenticeships at leading New York restaurants Aquavit and Bouley. In February, 2009 he opened his near-eponymous restaurant Jung Sik Dang instantly wowing gourmands with his innovative take on what he termed “New Korean”. Here are some highlights of my meal.
URCHIN (Seaweed Rice, Crispy Quinoa)
FOIE GRAS MANDOO (Wagyu Broth)
