5 Ways To Dispose Of Old Furniture Whether you’re getting ready to move, reduce the clutter, or simply refresh your home décor, you may find yourself with old furniture that you no longer want. Disposing of unwanted or old furniture can be a drag, especially for bulkier and larger pieces. However, you have several ways to go about it. This article shares some disposal methods for your old furniture pieces. Call A Rubbish Removal Firm Perhaps the most common way to dispose of large, bulky items like furniture pieces is to hire a rubbish removal company like Same-Day Rubbish Removal or others. Like other rubbish removal services, this local waste company offers to take anything you don’t want from your home. They will send professionals to your home and point them toward the furniture you don’t want. Then, they’ll determine the cost of the service, and if you agree on the price, they’ll load up the furniture pieces and haul them away. Hiring a rubbish removal company is a good option for removing larger furniture pieces without worrying about heavy lifting. Donate It To Charities If you want to get rid of your old but usable furniture for free and make a positive impact on society, you can consider donating it to charitable organizations where it’ll be repurposed or recycled. You can donate furniture pieces free of major damage, holes, stains, or rips. Others can still use it for a considerable amount of time. So, consider donating it. In general, some of the organizations you can contact to donate your used furniture are: Nonprofit organizations Shelters Charities Churches Schools Community centers Make sure to consider calling these organizations who might be interested in used furniture and arranging to have it picked up or dropped off. Knowing that your old furniture can be reused by other people in need instead of rotting up at the dump can be gratifying while helping you to clear out your space. It’s a win-win for those involved. Sell It Online If you’re not in a hurry to dispose of your furniture, you can put it up for sale online and make extra cash. Generally, you’ll need to find the right website and platform, like eBay, where you can sell old and used furniture. You can also try using social media, such as Facebook Marketplace, to post and sell your old furniture. Interested buyers will often drive right up and take their purchases away themselves. This way, you can save time and effort by hauling the bulky furniture pieces yourself. This method also saves you money on hiring someone to remove the items. Instead, it pays you to get the furniture you no longer want out of your home. Take It To Your Local Scrap Dealer If you have metal chairs, bed frames, or tables you no longer want, you may be able to take them to your local scrapyard and get extra cash. As with bottles and cans, you can sell metal furniture or even the metal parts of extremely damaged pieces to a scrap yard to recycle them. Before you opt for this method, you need to determine if the metal on your furniture is non-ferrous or ferrous. While most scrap yards will take either kind, non-ferrous metals will cost more to dispose of. So, how do you know if you have a ferrous or non-ferrous metal? Simply hold a magnet to the furniture. If it doesn’t stick, then it’s a non-ferrous metal. In addition, other materials in your furniture, such as plastics or glass, can also be extracted and recycled. You can ask your local scrap yard if they want old furniture. You can also do a simple Google search for scrap companies near you to get an idea of what they accept and how much they can pay you for old furniture. Throw It At The Curb If you’re only disposing of smaller pieces of furniture, like a small table or an ottoman, it may be possible to just leave them by the curb. Make sure to contact your local garbage pickup services first since they may charge for picking up larger items than regular waste. In addition, they may have rules or regulations on what can be picked up or have limited capacities on specific days. If you’re lucky, a passerby may see your furniture by the curb and pick it up to take home to reuse or sell. If you choose this method, make sure to carry the furniture piece to your curb the night before garbage day. This way, your furniture doesn’t have to be on the streets for too long and cause issues with your neighbors or homeowners' association. Takeaway As you can see, disposing of old furniture doesn’t have to be a headache. You have various options to get rid of your old furniture pieces without hurting your back and earn some extra money. So, whether you’ve set your eyes on a new sofa set or you have a worn wooden dining table set, consider the above options when it’s finally time to dispose of your old furniture.
