Types of Cannabis: What You Need to Know

Posted on by Jenni

Cannabis is one of the most commonly used illicit drugs in the world, but what exactly is it? Is it a depressant or a stimulant? A weak weed or a strong narcotic? For answers, it’s smart to know more about this fascinating plant. Cannabis is made up of several different types of plants that have been bred to have varying amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical that produces psychoactive effects. The various cannabis strains fall into two main categories: Sativa and Indica. These terms refer to the way in which the plant expresses its effects when grown indoors under specific conditions. Let’s take a look at some of the common types available and how they differ from one another.

What is Sativa?

Sativas are the hybrid strains with high THC levels and are known to cause a feeling of euphoria or “high.“ Since they contain a higher concentration of THC than indicas, they are typically associated with feelings of paranoia and anxiety, which are commonly referred to as “the munchies.” In fact, cannabis can cause increased levels of hunger, which can cause people to overeat and gain weight. The strain you choose depends on what you’re looking for—both mentally and physically. Sativas are great for treating pain, reducing inflammation, and increasing mental clarity and creativity. They can also be great for treating conditions like PTSD, MS, and migraines. But be careful, as even though Sativa is a natural painkiller, it can also increase anxiety and paranoia, which can lead to some dangerous situations.

What is Indica?

Indicas are a bit more sedating and are known to be better suited for treating anxiety and insomnia. They are also great for pain relief and relaxation. However, people who are looking for an energetic high may find that indicas are a bit lackluster. The strain you choose depends on what you’re looking for—both mentally and physically. Indicas are great for treating pain, reducing inflammation, and increasing mental clarity and creative abilities. They can also be great for treating conditions like insomnia, migraines, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

edible and inhaled cannabis difference

When consumed, the effects of cannabis take 45 minutes to three hours to kick in. During that period, you may feel increased anxiety, increased hunger, and increased motivation to get things done. However, the effects are generally pleasant and users generally describe an overall feeling of “warmth” or “well-being.” When inhaled, however, the effects begin almost immediately and last around 30 minutes to an hour. The feeling is generally known as a “high,” and users commonly describe a feeling of “lack of inhibition” or “euphoria.” There are several edible strains that have been designed with the goal of mimicking the effects of inhaled cannabis.

Hybrid Cannabis Types

Hybrid strains are composed of both Sativa and Indica genetics. While they’re a bit more powerful than pure Sativa or indica strains, they generally come with the added benefits of both. Hybrid strains are known for being great for treating chronic pain and are often preferred by patients suffering from conditions like arthritis and severe back pain. Hybrid strains are also known for causing less anxiety and are great for treating conditions like insomnia and anxiety. However, hybrids often come with a bit more “munchies” than pure Indica or pure Sativa strains. In some cases, this can lead to weight gain, which can be dangerous for people with obesity issues.

What is the best type of cannabis?

The best type of cannabis depends on a number of factors, including what you’re looking for, your experience level, and your budget. If you’re brand new to cannabis, you may want to start with Indica strains in order to ease into the experience. Pure Sativa strains are often too overwhelming for first-time users. You can also consider starting with a hybrid that’s 50/50 Indica and Sativa. These hybrids have been specifically bred to have the best qualities of both Indica and Sativa strains, so you can experience the full benefits of cannabis with minimal risk. If you’re looking for a strong, heady high, look for strains with high THC levels. If you want less anxiety and increased relaxation, choose Indica strains. If you want less hunger and weight gain, choose hybrid strains. These are just a few things to consider and to know about the edible and inhaled cannabis difference.
