What you need to consider when moving to a new state

What you need to consider when moving to a new state

Posted on by Jenni

Moving to a new state can be a very stressful time for all those involved, especially if you are moving to a place you don’t know, or you are relocating following a promotion at work. You might feel very quickly that you have bitten off more than you can chew, especially if you were considering doing it alone. There are plenty of things that you need to bear in mind when moving to a new state, but there are some that you need to target as a priority.

#1 Moving tech

First off, you are going to be moving a lot of fragile items over a long distance. This means that you are going to have to make sure that you are taking this into account when it comes to looking at moving companies. You are going to need to make sure that you are investing some of your moving funds in a company that will help you out and makes sure that your worldly possessions are treated with respect, especially if they are fragile. When it comes to things like tv shipping, you are going to have to find reliable people to move your television, and you can do this by using online directories.

#2 State laws

You are also going to need to make sure that you are aware of state laws. They might be different from what you are used to, and you are going to need to make sure that you know of any changes. For example, some states have different road laws or laws surrounding healthcare. Although this is complex, you should make sure that you know them so you aren’t breaking any laws.

#3 Your children’s stress

This is important as their stress level is going to be through the roof. So, you are going to need to make sure that you are giving them the space and the time that they need to come to terms with the loss of their home, and the fact that they are going to need to get used to a new one. You are going to need to be understanding and patient with them, and show them that their feelings are valid.

#4 Navigating your new neighborhood

You are going to need to know where you are going in your new neighborhood. This means encouraging your children to join clubs, knowing your social preferences, and making moves towards getting your face known in the area. You are going to find this a little tough at the beginning, but it will be well worth it, especially for your kids.

#5 Planning

Finally, and some might say most importantly, make sure that you are pre-planning everything. Things like meals, dates or times, and physically moving can all be difficult to work in harmony, and you are relying on people to be on time and not to cancel on you at the last minute. You need to make sure that everyone has plenty of time to communicate with you, so you have enough time to look for replacements or alternatives and thoroughly plan with them.
